Over the past two weeks, the Michigan men’s basketball team has acquired six transfer portal pickups, reconstructing its roster into one unrecognizable from last season. But now, there will be at least one familiar face.

News broke that graduate guard Nimari Burnett will return for another season on Tuesday, first reported by Michigan basketball. Burnett, who transferred to the Wolverines one year ago from Alabama was an integral part of their rotation. With his return, he has the potential to do the same this upcoming season while providing critical leadership.

Burnett was the only Michigan player to start in all 32 games last season, making him an integral part of its rotation. In 31.3 minutes per game, Burnett averaged 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Although his contributions were at times inconsistent, he also showed his capabilities often, recording 16 double-digit scoring games. With one more year at Michigan, Burnett will look to build on those instances of success.

The veteran presence that Burnett brings to the table is especially beneficial. Before playing at Alabama, Burnett began his collegiate career at Texas Tech before entering the transfer portal. That makes Michigan his third program. His lengthy experience makes him a great leader for the upcoming season, as the Wolverines are comprised of a plethora of transfers who have never played together.

It was unclear if Burnett would return to Michigan or college basketball at all after last season. But now, approaching his fifth and potentially final season, Burnett is ready to run it back with the Wolverines.
