According to a release from the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security Thursday morning, two students reported separate incidents in which unknown subjects attempted to extort money from them in exchange for not leaking explicit pictures and videos of the students. In both incidents, the students received friend invitations from the perpetrators on Facebook before communicating and video-chatting with them, after which the perpetrators demanded payment.

The incidents occurred Nov. 12 and 14. DPSS advises students who have received similar threats and demands to immediately contact the police, cease communication with the perpetrators, save and screenshot all correspondence with them and use online reporting processes to prevent any video from being posted on sites such as Skype or YouTube.
