COLUMBUS — In the NCAA Championships Friday night at St. John Arena, freshman Sam Mikulak became the first Michigan freshman to ever win the NCAA all-around title.

Mikulak also became the third Wolverine gymnast to win the honor in Michigan’s storied gymnastics history. The all-around title will probably be enough to earn him the NCAA Gymnast of the Year award, which will be announced tomorrow night.

Unfortunately this was not enough for the defending National Champion Michigan men’s gymnastics team, as it went on to finish fifth, only defeating Penn State.

As the runner-up to Michigan last year, Stanford not only avenged that loss but became the 2011 national champions.

Notable performances include Mikulak on the vault and floor exercise, senior Ian Makowske on the high bar and redshirt junior Adam Hamers on the pommel horse.

All three of those gymnasts placed in the top 10 of their respective events and will compete in the event finals tomorrow night.
