The Department of Public Safety released crime alerts for two armed robberies that occurred near Central Campus over the weekend.
On Friday, a student was walking down Oakland Avenue at 12:10 a.m. when five or six men approached him. One of the men asked the student if he had money, and then pulled out a gun. The student’s wallet was taken, and one of the men punched the student in the face. The men then fled in a four-door, dark-colored Sedan.
The student described two of the men as black and 21 years old. One of the men is described as wearing gym shorts, a black baseball cap and a white T-shirt, while the other has light-colored skin, a gray T-shirt and blue gym shorts.
On Sunday, a young man was walking down East University Avenue at 2:30 a.m. when an unknown man approached him and asked for his money. The suspect pulled out a knife, took the man’s cash and fled down South University Avenue.
The suspect is described as a white male of medium build between 18 and 20 years old who is between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 11 inches. The suspect also had a crew hair cut and wore a dark ball cap, a white T-shirt and dark gray shorts.
Ann Arbor police said they had no new details for either incident.
While Diane Brown, Department of Public Safety spokesperson, said the frequency of incidents in the area are consistent compared to previous years, she recommended that students take basic precautions to ensure they are aware of their surroundings.
“If you have to be by yourself in a slightly darkened area, then don’t have your iPod or your phone going,” Brown said. “That’s going to increase your vulnerability and also present you as more of a crime opportunity for people who might be preying on somebody who’s perceived to be vulnerable or weak.”
