Three stars of the weekend
Montoya continued his strong freshman campaign, giving up just two goals against strong competition this weekend. He made a career-high 38 saves on 39 shots to lead the Wolverines to Sunday’s win over the Golden Gophers. Minnesota entered the game ranked eighth in the country with 4.43 goals per game. On Friday, Montoya made 19 stops to lead Michigan to its 4-1 win over the Badgers.
Helminen netted his nation-leading third shorthanded goal in the second period of yesterday’s win. The sophomore took a pass from senior Mike Roemensky and beat Weber on an odd-man rush. Helminen also tallied an assist on Eric Werner’s first period shorthanded goal on Friday. He now leads the Wolverines with 14 points on the season.
Shouneyia broke a 1-1 tie on Friday with just one second remaining in the first period. The Badgers’ Jon Krall took a penalty with 3.3 seconds left for hitting after the whistle. Off of the ensuing faceoff, Michigan sophomore Eric Nystrom found Shouneyia just left of the net for the timely goal. The senior has amassed four goals and three assists in seven games since returning from an injury.
