In a system named for legendary coach Red Berenson, the Daily hockey writers rate the Wolverines on their performance in each of four areas. (Rated out of 4 pucks)

Offense
Despite scoring 10 combined goals in the week’s first two games, nearly getting shutout at home on Saturday is unacceptable against cellar-dwelling Northern Michigan.

One and a half pucks

Defense
Too many pucks are still going in Michigan’s net. Sauer is doing his part (mostly). We’re still waiting for the day the blue liners step up and play to their talent level.

One and a half pucks

Goaltending
Sauer earned his first shutout in a year and is playing his best hockey since November. If you’re looking for someone to blame for Saturday’s letdown, don’t look at him.

Three pucks

Special Teams
The penalty-kill units were strong all weekend long, helping to keep the Wolverines in the game. Unfortunately, the power play floundered in seven chances Saturday.

Two pucks
