Michigan Student Assembly election candidates were finalized yesterday, kicking off a two-week campaign that will involve about 40 students vying for 30 seats.

Seats are up for grabs in Rackham, Engineering, Business, Dentistry, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Medicine, Public Health, Law, and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. The election will take place on Nov. 19 and 20. Students will vote online for representatives in their own schools and colleges.

Four incumbent representatives are seeking reelection in their positions: Liz Hadeed and Jordan Salins; Rackham representative Michael Benson (who also holds the Student General Counsel position); and Engineering representative Sarah Mynhier. LSA representatives Andrew Chinsky and Tim Bekker, both of whom were appointed last year, are looking to hold onto their seats.

There are also three current representatives seeking positions representing new schools. Ashley Schneider, currently an Engineering representative, is running for an LSA position. Current LSA representatives Jason Raymond and Alex Serwer are both running for Business School seats.

25 of the positions are full-year seats (Winter 2009 through Fall 2009), and five are half-year seats made possible by vacancies on the Assembly (Winter 2009 only). The half-year positions will be awarded to the winning candidates with the lowest vote totals.

Of those running, 16 are running on the Michigan Action Party platform, 15 on the Defend Affirmative Action Party and seven are independents.
