Senior captain Maggie Viefhaus powered the No. 2 Michigan softball team to a 7-1 win in its Big Ten opener over No. 18 Illinois on Saturday. The third baseman cranked two home runs — a solo shot to lead off the second inning and a two-run shot in the next inning.
Two batters after Viefhaus’ first homer, first baseman Dorian Shaw smashed her team-leading 11th home run of the season to center field. The ball would’ve landed softly in the spacious Ray Fisher baseball outfield had it not been for the massive evergreens that separate the two stadiums.
Junior pitcher Jordan Taylor won her 13th game of the season in a 11-strikeout effort. She gave up her only run to Illinois on a home run to left-center from first baseman Meredith Hackett.
With the win, the Wolverines (1-0 Big Ten, 24-5 overall) have 16 victories in their last 17 games.
The team will take the field again tomorrow at 2:00pm for round two against the Fighting Illini.
