Exon lone Wolverine to advance in Invitational
The Michigan women’s tennis team made the trek out to
Arizona State for the 2004 Thunderbird Invitational.
Sophomore Elizabeth Exon made the journey back to Ann Arbor as
the only Wolverine to advance in championship play. Exon defeated
Arizona State’s Rebecca Rankin 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4) in the first
round of the tournament. Then, after losing in the second round,
Exon redeemed herself in a straight set win over Gloriann Lopez
from Texas Christian in the consolation match.
Junior Debra Steifler lost her first match to Whitney Deason of
Stanford, but finished the weekend with a 3-1 record. Her
consolation finals matchup with Arizona State’s Vana Tomas
was cancelled due to rain on Saturday night that caused unplayable
conditions on the courts.
