Angelina Jolie is known for her beauty on screen. But in the December release “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” she puts herself behind the camera and takes on the role of writer/director.
In the Land of Blood and Honey
“In the Land of Blood and Honey” revolves around the Bosnian war and a budding but forbidden romance between a Bosnian woman and a Serbian man that springs up in the middle of it. The film is primarily concerned with looking for beauty in the midst of a time of great horror, which is a noble undertaking and certainly is in line with Jolie’s humanitarian work. However, it’s a pretty big undertaking for a first-time director. Whether or not she can handle the density of the subject matter remains to be seen.
Judging from the trailer alone, it actually seems like Jolie has a grip on the subject matter. The trailer melds violence with the love story seamlessly through delicate cinematography — this isn’t an action-packed thriller at all. “In the Land of Blood and Honey” has also started to generate a little bit of Oscar buzz, so the movie must have some good things working for it. Then again, it’s easy to throw together some of the best moments of a movie with some soft piano music.
