Michigan coach Red Berenson announced Monday that junior defenseman Steve Kampfer returned to the ice and is skating before practices. Though the junior is not practicing with the team, he is skating with full pads.

“We’ll see how he handles skating by himself, and what the implications are with him skating by himself,” Berenson said. “He will not practice this week.”

Kampfer will not make the trip to the College Showcase at Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend, and it is still unclear when he will rejoin the team for practice and games.

He was injured in October in an off-ice incident and wore a neck brace until last week. His presence has been sorely missed along with that of senior captain Mark Mitera, who tore his ACL in the first game this season. Both were expected to anchor Michigan’s defense.
