LSA junior Sharita Williams died last week at the University Hospital after being struck by a car crossing Plymouth Road on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Witnesses said they saw a green Chevrolet Cavalier hit Williams while she was walking in the crosswalk, and the driver did not appear to see her. Though the driver remained on the scene following the accident, Ann Arbor Police Lt. Renee Bush said the driver had not been arrested or charged, AnnArbor.com reported

The driver’s name has not been released and AAPD did not return repeated requests for comment.

Friends and classmates of Williams have taken to social media to share memories of her and offer their condolences to her family.

“Sharita Williams was one of the kindest, funniest young women I have ever met. Although God has a reason for everything, I’ll miss her. RIP,” LSA junior Marian Digby tweeted.

University spokesperson Rick Fitzgerald said the University will offer grief counseling for those who worked with Williams over the summer.

“It’s always a difficult time when a student dies,” Fitzgerald said.

Shortly after William’s death, family and friends organized a fundraiser to pay for the funeral service. It raised $4,256 as of Thursday, near its goal of $5,000.

A public viewing is scheduled for tomorrow at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Detroit with the funeral to be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
