Steve Kuzak, a spring 2001 University graduate, drowned last Monday while swimming in the Detroit River with friends.

Nancy Mouradian, chief of staff for the Wayne County Sherriff”s Department, said Kuzak was swimming in the Stony Island area and did not return.
“We started the search later that afternoon to no avail,” Mouradian said. The Coast Guard station at Belle Isle contacted the Wayne County Sheriff”s Marine Unit, which then handled the search.
The search resumed the next morning, and Kuzak”s body was recovered around noon.
Donald Kuzak described his son as “a real loving kid.”
“He was a great kid. He was an avid golfer,” he said.
Steve Kuzak worked as a bag boy at a golf course near his Bad Axe home during high school and eventually became an assistant golf pro. He worked part time at a golf course while attending the University.
Donald Kuzaksaid his son found out June 28 that he passed his spring term classes, completing the requirements needed to graduate with a degree in general studies. He planned to pursue a career in marketing.
“We”re very proud of him,” Donald Kuzak said. “We”re just a big Michigan family.”
Donald graduated from the University, and Steve”s brother Chris is an LSA sophomore.
