HOLLAND, Mich. — Former University of Michigan and NFL tight end Jay Riemersma has been exploring the possibility of running for a southwestern Michigan congressional seat.

He’s to officially announce Monday morning that he has decided to run for the 2nd Congressional District seat now held by Republican Pete Hoekstra of Holland, who is running for governor next year.

Riemersma, who’s also a Republican, plans to announce his political plans at Symphony Park in downtown Holland.

He played at Zeeland High School before moving on to Michigan and then Buffalo and Pittsburgh in the NFL.

Other Republicans in the race are former state lawmaker Bill Huizenga of Zeeland and businessman Bill Cooper of Fruitport.
