University alums Kelly McKinnell and Kelly Pagel were among 13 people killed when a porch collapsed at an apartment party in Lincoln Park, a northern Chicago neighborhood, on June 29.

More than 50 people had crammed onto the apartment porch when it collapsed at about 12:30 a.m. 57 people were injured in the accident.

Kelly McKinnell, of Barrington, Ill., was a former photographer for The Michigan Daily and graduated in 1999 with a degree in photography from the University. She was planning on moving to Los Angeles to continue her work as a commercial photographer.

McKinnell was passionate about travel, visiting Thailand and Australia. She participated in numerous high school sports and was on the all-state field hockey team. She continued her love for sports as a photographer at the Daily.

Kelly Pagel was taken to the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she had no vital signs but was briefly resuscitated. This Business School graduate from Minnesota died on Monday night.

Pagel family and friends remember her for enthusiam and intelligence. She was highly motivated and overcame many hardships such as the death of her father while she was attending the University.
