The Department of Public Safety issued a crime alert Friday after a robbery, classified as “strong-armed,” ocurred in the Diag.

An Ann Arbor resident who expects to attend the University this fall was approached by a man as she was passing through the Diag Friday morning, DPS spokeswoman Diane Brown said.

The suspect asked the prospective student if she had any money, and when she said she did not, he grabbed her portable compact disc player and fled the scene on foot, the crime report stated.

The suspect was described as an 18 to 21-year-old Hispanic male about 5″6″ to 5″8″ and 170 to 10 pounds, according to the crime alert. The suspect has short black hair and a light moustache and was wearing a yellow t-shirt, light colored cargo pants and a red baseball hat.

Brown said crime alerts are issued in cases where crimes are committed against people and there is a description of the perpetrator. “We don”t have to issue them very often,” Brown said.
