Down a golfer, the Michigan women’s golf team finished eighth in its first tournament of the year, the Central District Classic in Parrish, Fla.

The Wolverines had strong play from senior Lindsey Davis and a career day for freshman Min Yean Tan.

In the fall season, Michigan’s best finish was a fourth-place tie at Price’s Give Um Five Intercollegiate tournament.

The Wolverines found themselves in a precarious situation from tournament’s start.

Freshman Louisa Shu withdrew from the first two rounds because of an allergic reaction, leaving Michigan with just four golfers and in ninth place after day one. Senior Lindsey Davis’s par score led the Wolverines’ in the opening round.

But on the final day of the tournament, Shu recovered to help the team to an eighth-place finish.

While host Michigan State won the tournament, Davis finished tied for 12th. Tan’s strong performance on the last nine holes (one-under par) helped her tie for 23rd. Her round of 230 bested her previous high of 232.
