At this time a year ago, I had just finished submitting the last of the paperwork that would allow me to study abroad at the National University of Ireland Galway. I was going through a box of pictures that I had hanging on my dorm wall last year when I discovered these Polaroids from a different trip to Ireland I’d taken with my family a few years ago. The pandemic isn’t what anyone had planned for, and I’ve been lucky that the extent of its effects on me have only been a cancelled study abroad trip and a sophomore year of college spent in my childhood bedroom. Right now I should be in a student dormitory across the ocean, but the world had other plans.
