After a one-year stint as the Michigan football team’s special teams coordinator, John Baxter has accepted the same position at Southern California, the Trojans announced Thursday.

Baxter previously served as USC’s special teams coordinator 2010-13, a span in which his teams blocked 24 kicks.

Baxter’s departure leaves Michigan to replace its second coordinator of the offseason. Former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin accepted an offer to become Maryland’s head coach in December.

Under Baxter, the Wolverines’ special teams tied for 12th nationally in special teams efficiency in 2015. The season also saw Jehu Chesson return a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, Michigan’s first kickoff return touchdown since 2009.
