It’s 6:45 p.m. Tuesday night: Taco Tuesday at La Taqueria. You’re with your housemates, rushing them out the door. Finally, your roommate (who’s always late) finishes her makeup in a flurry and you’re walking through the Diag, pace and heart rate increasing as you think of the refreshing tang of the spicy cucumber margarita sliding down your throat.
Rounding the corner of State Street and East Liberty, you can almost smell the delicious corn tortillas, fresh from the Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory. At last, you arrive and by some miracle, there’s a table available. Nestled outdoors in your pandemic-era igloo, your friends debate what to order. But you know what you’re getting, what you get every time. One Frijol taco and one Tofu taco, please.
Whether you’re vegetarian or not, La Taqueria has the perfect taco for you and at a great price. Not only is La Taqueria known for its surprisingly large and surprisingly cheap tacos, but their margarita selection is also the talk of the town. Starting at $6 for an original or $8 for fun flavors like pear cilantro and strawberry mango, at La Taqueria it’s quite possible to ball on a budget.
Their innovative menu –– including delicious brunch tacos (every Saturday and Sunday from 12-3 p.m.!) and handcrafted drinks –– earned La Taqueria the best Mexican restaurant in Ann Arbor of 2021. Now please excuse me while I go try the sweet Vainilla taco with lemon-vanilla custard, topped with fresh blueberries and toasted coconut in a cinnamon-vanilla waffle shell. My mouth is already watering.
