Almost a week ago, in an assignment for my screenwriting class, each student had to post two ideas and two comments on the class Canvas page for a short script that we hoped to write.

I’m not going to lie, I love Bollywood’s masala movies as much as the next person. But it wasn’t until I watched a non-commercial film that I realized how much my perception of the industry is shaped by those in power.

I’m sick of being told what I am and what I am not.

Muslims are constantly in the media but rarely for good reason. Muslims are often called terrorists or accused of oppressing women. They are rarely spoken of as regular people going about their daily lives.

I was recently at an open mic night for LGBTQ folks to tell their coming out stories. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, for a predominately white institution like the University of Michigan, the speakers and audience were both of a surprisingly multiracial composition.
