The Michigan women’s basketball team’s game against Minnesota scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28 has been canceled due to COVID-19 related issues within the Gophers. According to a statement from the team, this decision was mutually agreed upon by both teams. Due to the limited remaining time in the regular season, this game will not be rescheduled and declared a no contest.
This game is the 10th postponement or cancellation the Wolverines have faced this season. The first matchup with Minnesota, scheduled for Feb. 4, was postponed due to the Michigan Athletic department’s two week pause. This means the two teams will not face-off in the regular season.
This cancellation follows a five hour delay due to COVID-19 issues before the team’s game against Iowa on Thursday.
With this cancellation, Michigan’s game against Northwestern at home next weekend will be its final regular season matchup scheduled so far. The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled to start on March 9, meaning there is a very small chance the Wolverines are able to reschedule any of their other nine postponed games.
Michigan will likely finish having played only 17 games, 12 of those being conference matchups. This will be the second fewest overall and conference games of any team in the conference, with Rutgers playing the least.
Coming off its worst loss of the season, Michigan hoped to get back in the groove on Sunday against Minnesota. Now, they will be able to come home and regroup before finishing out the regular season at home.
