The Ann Arbor Police Department has declared a report of an armed robbery near campus to be a false claim, according to AAPD.  Officers were called at approximately 10:40 a.m. Tuesday to the report of a robbery.

The police arrived at North University and State Street, where the University of Michigan Police held a suspect in custody. The police have come to believe that the man who reported the incident did so after a failed drug deal, MLive reported.

The suspect and victim in the incident had known each other, according to AAPD. The victim had agreed to withdraw $40 from the ATM and exchange it for drugs, but instead the suspect took the money and ran, leading to the victim to report it as a robbery.

The man who filed the complaint could now be charged with making a false report, but has not expressed a desire to prosecute the original suspect.

The original complaint indicated that a gun may have been involved in the exchange, but the police later determined that there was no weapon present.
