School of Music, Theatre & Dance professor David Daniels and his husband, Scott Walters, were arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual assault.

Daniels and Walters both face extradition to Texas for the alleged rape of Samuel Schultz, a New York based baritone, in Houston in 2010.

Daniels has been on a leave of absence from the University of Michigan since August 2018, just after the allegations came out. Numerous allegations of sexual misconduct emerged since then.

University spokeswoman Kim Broekhuizen wrote in a statement to The Daily the University will continue to monitor the situation.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation as we determine the appropriate next steps,” Broekhuizen wrote.

Daniels was hired by the University of Michigan in 2015 and given tenure in May 2018.  Daniels’s tenure review did not include the sexual assault allegations that had been made against him.

Daniels had previously filed a countersuit in December 2018 against Andrew Lipian, a Music, Theatre & Dance graduate student who sued in federal court in October 2018. He accused Daniels of drugging him and assaulting him, as well as the University of knowing of the claims against Daniels and ignoring them. Daniels had denied all accusations made against him.

If convicted, Daniels and Walters can face between 2-20 years in prison.
