Michigan’s leading rusher in 2019 won’t be back next season. According to the Detroit Free Press, Zach Charbonnet has entered the transfer portal.

Though Charbonnet’s usage dropped in 2020 when he ran for just 124 yards on 19 carries, he would have come into spring ball as an experienced junior amid a stacked depth chart at running back. Given that depth chart, though, the choice to transfer isn’t all that surprising.

Michigan returns leading rusher, junior Hassan Haskins and sophomore Blake Corum. The Wolverines also signed top-50 recruit Donovan Edwards at the position from West Bloomfield along with three-star Tavierre Dunlap.

Charbonnet, a California native, came out of Oaks Christian High School as a top-50 recruit himself. Though he made a notable impact early in the 2019 season, Haskins soon cracked the rotation and Charbonnet was never able to establish himself as a bell cow.

Instead, it was Haskins who took that role in games late in the year, moving ahead of Charbonnet and fifth-year Chris Evans in the rotation.

Now, Charbonnet will take his talents elsewhere.
