Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump campaigned in Grand Rapids and Warren Monday, highlighting a closing gap between him and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
The candidates remain in one point of each other according to a poll from The Washington Post and ABC tracking vote preferences. However, according to an aggregate of polls from RealClearPolitics, Clinton still leads Trump by 3.1 points.
The Michigan Daily did not receive credentials for these events. The Detroit Free Press reported thousands gathered at Macomb Community College to hear the candidate speak. The last time Trump came to Michigan was in late September, when he attended fundraisers in Grand Rapids and Detroit and rallied in Novi. Trump has visited the state a total of six times since the Republican National Convention last July.
The visits came shortly after news emerged that the FBI is looking into additional emails that may be tied to a previous investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server for email during her time as Secretary of State, found during a separate inquiry into former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). Weiner is married to Clinton campaign aide Huma Abedin. In July, Comey told Congress he was closing the investigation into Clinton’s use of the server and it would not result in any criminal charges.
Trump spoke for about an hour about Clinton and further discussed developments in the sexting case involving former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner — the former husband of longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
He also spent a considerable amount of time on local issues, promising the crowd he would keep jobs in Michigan and focusing on disadvantages of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“The agreement was defective when we made the agreement,” Trump said, according to MLive. “Everybody knew it and nobody changed it. They get the money, we get the drugs. We get the unemployment we get the losses. … It used to be that cars were made in Flint and you couldn’t drink the water in Mexico, now the cars are made in Mexico and you can’t drink the water in Flint.”
Trump is next scheduled to appear publically on Tuesday in Valley Forge, Pa., with Gov. Mike Pence (R–Ind.), the Republican vice presidential nominee.
