DPSS warns of fraudulent Facebook group survey
A fraudulent survey asking for personal information was posted in a private University of Michigan student Facebook group, “Ladies of UofM: Buy, Sell, Trade." The survey claimed to concern “sexual activity and cervical cancer,” and offered gift cards in return for the personal information.
The U-M Department of Public Safety and Security released a statement making the public aware of the survey and asked students who had given personal information to the survey to contact the University of Michigan police department directly.
DPSS also provided resources on protecting oneself from crime online. They also listed tips in their statement.
“Do not open attachments from people you do not know. Use extreme caution when sharing personal information, even if the source promises confidentiality. Never send compromising images of yourself to anyone, no matter who they are, or who they say they are. Turn off your electronic devices and web cameras when you are not using them,” DPSS said.
