AAPD officer resigns amid internal investigation regarding past conduct

After being placed on administrative leave in November, Ann Arbor police officer Michael Alvarez officially resigned on Jan. 10, as reported by MLive Wednesday morning. During this time, Alvarez was under an internal investigation for a previous incident in Florida.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Alvarez was a detective involved in a case against a man who faced child pornography and molestation charges. The case was dropped by the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office due to false statements used to search the defendant’s house.

The order written by Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge “found law enforcement officials engaged in a ‘ruse’ to obtain a search warrant for one crime that they used to obtain evidence to prosecute other crimes,” as noted by the Tampa Bay Times in an earlier article. This violated the defendant’s rights against unreasonable search and seizure.

AAPD did not respond to The Daily's request for comment in time for publication.
