AAPD concludes alleged hate crime did not occur
On Wednesday, the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety and Security released a cancellation of the crime alert issued last month. The reported incident, in which a woman alleged that a man instructed her to remove her hijab or else he would set her on fire with a lighter, did not occur.
According to the updated police report from Ann Arbor Police Department, there were a number of discrepancies between eyewitness testimonies and surveillance tapes from the scene.
“Investigators conducted witness interviews and reviewed multiple surveillance videos of the area in question,” the alert cancellation stated. “During the course of the investigation, numerous inconsistencies in the statements provided by the alleged victim were identified. Following a thorough investigation, detectives have determined the incident in question did not occur.”
The report concludes that the completed investigation will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for review.
The University and AAPD were unavailable for comment.
