Tenure bylaw working group granted extension
The deadline for a faculty working group to amend Board of Regents two bylaws relate to the dismissal of tenured faculty was pushed back to Nov. 21, according to Kentaro Toyama, Information professor and committee member.
The group had an initial deadline of Nov. 15 to to submit its first recommendations for bylaw additions to University President Mark Schlissel.Toyama told The Daily in an email the committee pushed the deadline back in order to give the working group sufficient time to finalize the draft.
This extension will not delay the final set of recommendations, according to Toyama. In order for the recommendations to be implemented, they will have to be approved by the board and Schlissel.
This committee comes after sexual assault allegations against tenured professors were revealed. When tenured School of Music, Theater & Dance professor David Daniels was accused of sexual assault by a former student in 2017 and 2018, it spurred a discussion in the community about how the University should act when tenured professors are accused of misconduct.
Provost Martin Philbert said in a press release it is important to continue to uphold and prioritize Michigan’s values.
“In rare circumstances, the University needs to invoke and follow procedures by which tenure is removed,” Philbert said. “In such cases, it is imperative that our policies and procedures reflect our commitment to due process and to our shared community values. As such, timely, fair and transparent resolution of cases is an imperative.”
When contacted by The Daily about why the working group received an extension, University spokesperson Rick Fitzgerald stated he had nothing more to add.
