It started on Mar. 11, when Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Four minutes after it was reported, the NBA suspended the 2019-20 season “until further notice.” That was when the snowball effect happened.
The morning after the NBA was suspended, March 12, the Big Ten canceled the remainder of its men’s basketball tournament, just 15 minutes before Michigan was supposed to tip off against Rutgers. As the day unfolded, the NCAA canceled all remaining winter and spring competitions, and announced what we had all believed would be inevitable: the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments would not take place.
In the span of the next week or so, all professional leagues shut down their operations for the near future. As COVID-19 continues to tear through the United States, no one is sure when sports will be back, but the immediate ramifications are apparent.
