Over the weekend, multiple University students and faculty reported difficulties logging into Canvas Sunday afternoon. Some users also reported being able to log in to Canvas, but said the page was distorted and unusable.

In a University-wide status report Sunday, Information and Technology Services announced they believed they had resolved the intermittent issue with logging into Canvas.

“Everyone should be able to log in, and there should be no distortion to the page once you log in,” the report says. “ITS will closely monitor through the evening.”

In an e-mail to The Michigan Daily on Monday, Sean DeMennor, who is Executive Director for Teacher and learning at ITS, said the problem was not caused by Merit or University networks.

“The Canvas access problem was the combined result of a couple of issues with the configuration of routing to and through the Amazon cloud infrastructure; neither Merit nor U-M networks were the source of the issue,” he said. “ITS technical teams worked with Amazon and Merit to identify the misconfiguration which was quickly addressed by Amazon personnel once the problem was understood.”

Demonner said the Canvas service was impacted Saturday afternoon through Sunday at 6:40 p.m. Though approximately 250 tickets were received by the ITS Service Center related to the issue, not all users were affected.
