Michigan’s COVID-19 related deaths have climbed to 5,017 according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday. With 435 newly reported cases, Michigan has a total of 52,350 cases. MDHH reports a fatality rate of 10 percent and the average age of the deceased is 73.5 years.
MDHH noted 43 deaths included in Tuesday’s reporting were identified in a review of death certificates that were not previously reported.
Currently with 10,417 cases and 1,276 deaths, the city of Detroit still has the most cases in Michigan followed by Wayne County with 8,875 cases and 999 deaths. Washtenaw County has 1,251 cases and 89 deaths.
According to the Center for Disease Control, COVID-19 related deaths have been declining across the United States. The daily number of deaths, cases, and hospitalization have also declined in the state of Michigan, which aligns Stage 4 of Whitmer’s MI Safe Start Plan.
On Monday, Whitmer announced restaurants, bars, retail stores and offices in Northern Michigan can reopen with some restrictions in time for Memorial Day weekend.
