There’s a new Thanksgiving tradition. Dubbed “friendsgiving,” the occasion allows friends to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday together a few days ahead of the traditional family feast. In recent years, the unofficial holiday has become increasingly popular, especially among millennials.
This year, the Daily decided to crash an Ann Arbor friendsgiving celebration to see what all the hype was about. LSA senior Breah Dean hosted the gathering for a group of six friends, who met last semester while studying abroad in Switzerland.
LSA senior Marissa Henry said a chance encounter this fall sparked the idea for the get-together.
“There was one guy in our group. I ran into him on the street and we talked for like five minutes,” Henry said. “And then Breah came, and happened to run into us, too. And then we got really excited because it’s very rare that we all see each other randomly so we thought, ‘Friendsgiving, let’s do it. Everyone’s doing it, we all like food, no one’s gonna say no.’ ”
Their menu featured chicken, which Henry said was easier to make than turkey, stuffing, baked brie, a baguette, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, pumpkin pie, mashed sweet potatoes and cookies.
