Mark Hoeltzel, former Michigan Medicine pediatric doctor, was sentenced on Feb. 25 in a Washtenaw County court for two charges of criminal sexual conduct. According to the Detroit Free Press, he faces between five and 15 years in prison on the second-degree charge and between 13 months and two years on the fourth-degree charge.
This comes after Hoeltzel was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in December on the charge of online enticement of a minor.
Hoeltzel was initially under investigation for a two-year sexual relationship with one of his female patients who was a minor at the time.
He has admitted to creating a Facebook account under a false identity pretending to be a teenage male to engage in sexual conversations with young girls. In addition, during a police search of Hoeltzel’s home, they found a flash drive containing 200 images of child pornography.
Hoeltzel must pay $10,000 in restitution to one of his victims. However, as part of Hoeltzel’s plea agreement, four other counts were dismissed, according to MLive.
According to MLive, three victims testified to experiences with Hoeltzel at the hearing.
One of them claimed Hoeltzel not only sexually assaulted her, but failed to give her proper medical treatment.
“He never gave me that treatment,” she said during her impact statement. “So, not only did he seek me out, groom me, manipulate me and sexually assault me, but he purposely made me sicker. He went out of his way to prescribe inaccurate and harmful medications. I’m lucky to be alive.”
Hoeltzel was terminated immediately from Michigan Medicine upon discovery of the investigation in December 2017 and has since had his medical license revoked.
