A black doll was found Tuesday hanging from a noose in a shower at Eastern Michigan University’s Best Hall, one of the freshman dorms on campus, according to a Click On Detroit report.
The student responsible for hanging the doll was caught and questioned, stating the action was a prank without any malicious intent. In a statement from EMU officials, they said they are addressing the issue with the utmost concern.
“Eastern Michigan takes this matter very seriously,” the statement said. “There is absolutely no place at Eastern for hateful and racist actions, regardless of their intent. At this time, the university continues to investigate the incident and will take appropriate steps upon completion of the investigation.”
In 2016, an Eastern Michigan University student was arrested and charged with three counts of malicious destruction of property for spray painting racist graffiti on several areas around campus. Student protests ensued after the racist remarks were found.
According to Eastern Michigan University officials, the student may face charges of ethnic intimidation as well as expulsion from the school.
