Two students reported they were assaulted by a group of 12 unknown people near East University Avenue early Friday morning.

The two students were walking between houses at around 1:40 a.m. in the 1000 block of East University, south of Tappan Avenue and Greenwood Avenue, when they were approached by the group. Bystanders eventually intervened to stop the assault.

The Division of Public Safety and Security distributed a crime alert pertaining to the incident Friday morning.

Witness descriptions reported to the Ann Arbor Police were limited, but the eight male and four female suspects possibly include a Black male described as 20-25 years old with cornrows and a medium build and complexion. He was reported to be six feet tall, weigh 180 pounds and was wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. The group also included a Black female in her late teens or early 20s with a large, bleached-blonde afro and wearing a white top with black leggings.

The Ann Arbor Police could not be reached for comment Friday morning.
