A fatal house fire killed a resident and left a firefighter critically injured on Thursday night.

The Ann Arbor Fire Department said the 51-year-old man who lived in the house on the 3500 block of Paisley Court was pronounced dead on the scene.

AAFD is working with the Ann Arbor Police Department to investigate the fire and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

According to a press release from the AAFD, firefighters arrived at the house at about 8 p.m. and began the search for the resident inside. During the search, a firefighter fell through a hole in the floor and was immediately taken to St. Joseph Hospital. The firefighter, who has been with the AAFD for more than a decade, will need surgery for broken ribs and leg fractures.

In a press release, Fire Chief Mike Kennedy praised the department’s work and offered condolences to the family of the victim.

“Our crews took great risk last night with their efforts searching for the resident,” Kennedy said. “The bravery of our crews and the injured firefighter cannot be overstated. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this tragic event.”

The AAPD referred all questions to the AAFD, which had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
