Nick Pastujov scored a power play goal in the first period to give Michigan a decisive lead on Friday.

The movement of the puck spread the defense open, leaving Nick Pastujov open down low at the base of the net. Recognizing this, Michael sent the puck to his brother, who swiftly turned, pulled back and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Morris, converting the man-advantage in 18 seconds. Pinpoint execution for a goal that would give Michigan a decisive lead in an eventual 3-0 win over Notre Dame.

Graduate transfer forward Jacob Hayhurst has just five points in 20 games this season for Michigan.

High expectations were set for Hayhurst from the start, when the coaching staff pitched him on the top line with senior forwards Jake Slaker and Will Lockwood, the returning two highest scorers from the year before. He was given top-line minutes, but the top-line offense failed to click, and he was a large reason why.

Cam York scored as Michigan beat Penn State, 4-1, on Saturday.

Cam York had crouched and thrown a fist bump, leaping into the air. He had jumped into the arms of his teammates. He had gone over to receive congratulations from each of his teammates on the bench.

But he wasn’t done. As he skated into the empty defensive zone, about to set up for the faceoff at center ice, he let out one last scream.

On Sunday facing Wisconsin, Garrett Van Wyhe thrived on the penalty killing unit.

Naturally, when a team is on the power play, it focuses primarily on offense and lets its defense slightly slack as a side effect. And when a team is on the penalty kill, it focuses on defense, clearing the puck when it can instead of organizing an offensive attack. The gray area between the two is where Garrett Van Wyhe thrives. As the opposing team, on the power play, shifts out of its defensive positioning to put more pressure on the net, it’s an easy read for him when he collects the puck and has to decide what to do with it. He decides to attack the opposing net.

MADISON — There was an uncanny resemblance to the game as Luke Morgan converted a shorthanded breakaway to bring Michigan’s lead to two early in the second period.

Shades of Saturday’s matchup against Wisconsin started to show Sunday.

Jimmy Lambert couldn't convert a key scoring chance in Michigan's 3-2 loss to Wisconsin.

MADISON — The second the puck was secured and the whistle was blown, the previous play was called for review.

Jimmy Lambert skated over in front of the review booth as the referee informed the crowd of the assessment. The sophomore forward was desperate to plead his case, but there was no judge and jury, no gray area for opinion to sway to.

When the replay debuted on the big screen above center ice, the hard video evidence showed three things as clear as day.

EAST LANSING — Kris Mayotte turned to Mel Pearson on the bench, and with a grim expression on his face, the assistant coach — in charge of goaltending — shouted one word, or rather, one name.

Pearson had presumed Mayotte wanted to discuss the goal Strauss Mann had just allowed, his third of the night. But when a second shout of Hayden Lavigne’s name came, without another thought, Pearson cued the switch of goaltenders — a “no-brainer” he later called the decision.

Michigan coach Mel Pearson believes Michigan is close to getting past its power play struggles.

Against Minnesota, the Wolverines went 0-for-9 on power plays, reflecting the pains of their overall lack of offensive production for the weekend. Four of the man-advantages went without a single shot on goal for Michigan. The team just couldn’t find a breakthrough on offensive special teams.

Johnny Beecher’s body language said it all.

The freshman forward had a breakaway with senior forward Jake Slaker running the ice on the opposite side of the neutral zone in the first period. But Beecher swung the pass too early and Slaker crossed the blue line with the puck while Beecher was already in the offensive zone, causing an offsides call.

It was just one wasted chance in a game of many — ultimately leading to a 3-1 loss for the Wolverines (3-5-2, 0-3-1-0) against the Golden Gophers (4-4-1 overall, 1-1-2-2 Big Ten).

Minnesota goaltender Jack LaFontaine played at Michigan from 2016-18.

This weekend against Minnesota, the Michigan hockey team may see a familiar face in Jack LaFontaine.

The goalie played for the Wolverines from 2016-18 and has always envisioned himself coming back.
