For 197-pound fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow and sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris, there was no shortage of opportunity for leadership in Michigan wrestling’s first dual meet of the season. Against No. 17 North Carolina, the Wolverines’ two new captains wrestled in the final two matches of the meet with Michigan looking to make up an eight-point deficit in team points.

But instead of letting 12 minutes dictate the rest of the game, Michigan snapped out of its complacent funk. Eleven minutes later, Yekka averted disaster for the Wolverines when a Spartan header, meant to redirect a goal kick to a teammate, landed at her feet. Splitting two defenders, Yekka sneaked the ball past the outstretched leg of Spartan goalkeeper Lauren Kozal and inside the right post to recapture the lead, 3-2, for good.

Senior forward Meg Dowthwaite scored the game-winning goal against Ohio State on Friday.

Eight minutes into overtime, senior forward Meg Dowthwaite obliged, scoring her sixth goal of the season. She cleaned up a rebound that dribbled through the pads of Buckeye goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez to give the Michigan field hockey team (9-3 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) its fourth win over Ohio State (6-5, 1-3) in three years, its third in overtime against its rival during the same span. The goal was neither the result of a planned set play nor aesthetically pleasing, but it secured the 2-1 victory and extended the Buckeyes’ winless streak against Michigan that stretches back to 2011.

Junior midfielder Sarah Stratigakis' second-half goal fired Michigan past Ohio State on Sunday.

Senior goalkeeper Gunner Garn turned in his best start of the season in win against Ohio State.

Decker Curran was one of the few bright spots for the Michigan men's lacrosse team in their loss to Johns Hopkins.

Overcoming a two-quarter scoring drought is hard enough in any circumstance. Against one of the premier lacrosse programs in the NCAA, it’s nearly impossible.

The Michigan men’s lacrosse team (3-6 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) learned this lesson the hard way over the weekend when it faced No. 18 Johns Hopkins (4-4, 1-0). A 10-0 run by the Blue Jays spanning the second and third quarters proved too much to come back from for the Wolverines, who lost by a final score of 14-8.

Alex Buckanavage had a hat-trick in Michigan's 12-9 loss to Notre Dame on Tuesday.

But it proved to be a mirage. Notre Dame’s lead grew twice and left the Wolverines with a halftime task three times as big as they expected less than a minute before.

Senior Brent Noseworthy scored his 100th career point in Michigan's 17-16 double overtime loss to Drexel.

As it did in its first game of the season against Cleveland State, the Michigan men’s lacrosse team held a multiple goal lead at halftime against Drexel. And, as they did 10 days ago, the Wolverines once again failed to completely shut the door on their opponent. This time it cost them.

Michigan (1-1) lost in double overtime, 17-16, on Tuesday, dropping its first home opener in six years at the hands of the Dragons (1-1).

Freshman Drew Mattin played above his weight class in Michigan's victory.

By pinning Matthew Vinci at 4:04 into the match, the sophomore brought Michigan back to its winning ways in the team’s return to Cliff Keen Arena. The fall gave the Wolverines a lead they would never relinquish and Michigan shook off its first loss of the season, beating Northwestern (3-10 overall, 1-7 Big Ten) by the score of 30-9. The commanding win saw the Wolverines drop three matches — all by decision — while the seven victories included two decisions, three major decisions and two falls.
