Senior defenseman Nick Boka originally committed to Michigan State before committing to Michigan.

From the time he could pick up a stick, Nick Boka wanted to be a Wolverine. And both of his grandparents were fervent Michigan hockey fans. Many years back at a Michigan game, Boka was playing mini-sticks in the halls behind the bleachers at Yost Ice Arena.

Sophomore Mattias Siimar shined in the No. 1 spot for the Wolverines, dispatching Cornell’s Alafia Ayeni in a 6-4, 6-1 triumph .

Early in doubles play on Friday, Michigan junior Connor Johnston and sophomore Harrison Brown trailed Cornell’s No. 1 doubles pair, 2-0. The Big Red appeared to be on their way to a decisive victory over the Wolverines.

But the duo rebounded by winning six out of the next seven games, netting a 6-3 win while setting the stage for a 4-1 Michigan victory over Cornell.

Freshman Nick Blankenburg moved to forward after playing as a defenseman earlier in the year.

Two years ago, Nick Blankenburg was a forward. Two weeks ago, the freshman was a defensive force on the blue line against Ohio State.
But two days from now, the freshman will more than just go back to his roots — during practice on Tuesday, Blankenburg skated with Michigan’s top line for the first time since converting back to being a forward.

Nick Pastujov hit iron three times in the first period against Penn State in Michigan's 5-2 loss.

NEW YORK CITY — If you count striking iron, Nick Pastujov had a hat trick in the first period alone, and Michigan led Penn State, 4-3.

Officials don’t though, and nothing in the rulebook would have aided the Wolverines’ offensive execution on Saturday night.

Mel Pearson's Michigan hockey team is in a similar place as Penn State.

At that point, the Nittany Lions seemed set. With college hockey’s most dominant offense and All-American candidates like Evan Barratt and Alex Limoges, Penn State seemed destined to establish itself as one of the best teams in the Big Ten.

But since then, Penn State and Michigan are 4-7-2 and 2-4-6, respectively, since that roller-coaster of a series. After lurking around the top 10 of the Pairwise, the Nittany Lions find themselves at 18th. Like the Wolverines at the beginning of the season, Frozen Four hopes were not an unrealistic ideal. But also like Michigan, it’s on the outside looking in.

As he did last year, Junior goaltender Hayden Lavigne holds the key to any potential run.

For every strong stretch that Lavigne and Mann have had this season, shuffling them around makes it that much harder for them to build on it.

It’s time to choose one of them, and squandering Lavigne’s recent heroics against such tough foes could be a season-defining mistake.

Freshman forward Garrett Van Wyhe had seven shots on goal over the weekend against the Buckeyes.

With an outstretched skate and some faceoff grit, freshmen defenseman Nick Blankenburg and forward Garrett Van Wyhe proved in Michigan hockey’s series split at Ohio State that they’re here to stay.

Michigan in a game against Ohio State at The Schottenstein Center Friday. Michigan won 2-1.

With their backs to the wall, against a team that beat them four times last year, the Wolverines did more than fight back.

Michigan killed the penalty, and after junior forward Jake Slaker scored minutes later to tie the game, it never looked back. At the end of the day, Slaker and the Wolverines walked off the ice with a 2-1 win over the Buckeyes.

Before coming to Michigan, Max Shuart and Niko Porikos played for Victory Honda, a AAA team, at the Big House.

A year before Michigan Stadium set a record by holding 104,173 screaming hockey fans, and more than eight years before Michigan and Notre Dame drop the puck at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday, the prospect of Michigan successfully holding the “Big Chill at the Big House” against Michigan State was, quite literally, on thin ice.
