Feminism is a complex issue that fundamentally deals with dynamics and relationships between women, men, society, race, class, politics, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability and a whole host of other large, abstract ideas. Feminism is far from new, but since around 2014, “culture (has) become a feminist issue.” That was the year of Beyoncé’s iconic 2014 Video Music Awards performance.

Most of the time when I attend a University of Michigan-sponsored lecture from someone in the technology industry — be it a designer, researcher, teacher, engineer or investor — he or she focuses on choices they made to keep their business, product or process authentic and diverse. However, there often seems to be an elephant in the room, so to speak. Rarely do these speakers discuss their finances. It’s no secret that if a speaker is invited to a University event, they are a leader in their field, often with years of experience at various positions.

Only 20 percent of computer science undergraduates at the University of Michigan in LSA are women.  The first Black woman to receive a Ph.D. in computer science from the University did so only three years ago.
