Thirteen years ago, the first episode of “Mad Men” aired on AMC. The show’s television success was something of a marvel given its noticeably slow-paced, character-driven story. The legacy of the show’s accurate historical aura has only increased year by year as audiences reflect on Don Draper’s (Jon Hamm) existential searching. Re-watching the seven-season long masterpiece in 2020 makes us question the proportions by which 1960s WASP culture dramatically reshaped notions of capital-driven success and the American Dream.

“What’s your greatest fear?” It’s the big question that’s asked intermittently between performance segments of “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, which was released on Netflix this past Christmas Eve. For some, the question is simple. 11-year-old Oriah says it’s needles and pigeons. For 10-year-old Alex, it’s not taking enough risks. Others, like Broadway legend André De Shields, 73, have no fears. “I believe fear, like any prejudice or bias or predisposition, is taught, and therefore learned”.

“Where are you from?” is a hard question for me to answer.

“Do you mean, where do I live right now?” is usually my most common rebuttal. I don’t mean to be difficult, I just want to provide an honest response. Before I turned 18, I had already lived in 12 different houses and attended eight different grade schools.

As I sat on a boulder in the middle of the Saluda River in North Carolina, I raised a can of Twisted Tea to my lips. I had never tried one before, and the taste was sweet and lemony — easily mistakable for a non-alcoholic beverage. “That’s dangerous,” I said to my friends, noting its satisfying intake that could have easily led me to drink five more.

As someone who spent a significant portion of his junior year of high school as an exchange student in South Africa, my fascination with the country always rested upon the culminating forces which make South Africa such a beautifully globalist society.
