My mother is a 5 foot 2 inch Indian woman and I’m her only child. This statement alone should speak volumes about our relationship. To compensate for my lack of siblings, at times she acts like my older sister. At times when I’m overwhelmed with life and a bit lost (as one is inevitably bound to be in their early 20’s), she acts as my guide and greatest comfort. Somehow, she’s also managed to find the right balance of being my best friend and my greatest annoyance and even a few times what seems to be my arch nemesis.

Now more than ever before, I have found myself with a fuse shorter than imaginable. I am a ticking time bomb, eager to be set off preemptively. Harmless slights from my siblings lead to prolonged campaigns of verbal exodus consisting of every insult in the book and insignificant disagreements with my parents are the catalyst to what seems to be the next world war. It’s a marvel no one in my family has had some type of mental breakdown resulting from the compounding stress and anxiety being generated like electricity from a turbine of anguish.

NOSELL. 2019 Ramadan Suhoor Festival

Observed by Muslims, the holy month of Ramadan sets forth a month of fasting, spiritual reflection and personal growth. Muslims are intrinsically joined together by group prayers, shared meals and charitable activities, propelling the meaning of Ramadan through connectedness. Exemplifying this connectedness is Dearborn, Mich., one of the largest Muslim communities in the U.S.

If I stretch my memory as far back as it’ll bend, I can remember the first time I had to teach myself how to breathe again. My parents had gone to a fundraiser, leaving me alone with my sister and my brother. I don’t remember exactly why, but I remember I needed to talk to my mom on the phone. For whatever reason, maybe because they thought I was too much of a mama’s girl or maybe they wanted to mess with me, my siblings wouldn’t let me call her.

Trigger Warning: mention of intimate partner violence, abuse, violence

The new FX series titled “Dave” is a semi-autobiography of David Burd, played by himself, who goes by Lil Dicky on stage. Yes, it is a corny dick joke and yes, I kinda love it. Moving on.

Addiction is like prayer

Begging for release

Craving freedom from self

Entropy is me

Freedom is not--

Guiding me home

Hanging me slowly; Hanging me slow

Inmate is me

Jah will be

Nectar from mother

Oxtail is home

Pride is culture

It is during times like this, when normalcy escapes us and uncertainty consumes us, that what defines us becomes clear. Our identities as Wolverines no longer hinge on the routines we had on campus, but rather on the integral parts of our identity which allow us to claim ownership over the title “leaders and best.” Through our resilience, leadership, and connectedness, we are able to feel like a Wolverine during a time where being a Wolverine looks entirely different than before.

15%. That’s how many undergraduate students at the University of Michigan are members of social sororities or fraternities. Though far below the “majority,” it seems like every person I’ve talked to is a member of some greek organization, promoting their next event or fundraiser. Despite the many negative stereotypes, I, like many other girls, came to college eager to participate in the famous “rush process.”

According to the CDC, 160 to 214 million Americans could be infected by the novel coronavirus over the course of the pandemic. Of those infected, 200,000 to 1.7 million are projected to die. The sudden onslaught of COVID-19 has taken the nation by surprise. Cracks in the United States health infrastructure have been exposed, amplifying feeble preparedness and ability to protect the average Americans, let alone the most vulnerable populations.
