The women of the Michigan rowing team’s 1V8 boat captured bronze in June’s NCAA championship grand final.

The women of the Michigan rowing team’s 1V8 boat have mastered this technique through thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of strokes during practices, erg pieces, races and training trips. Sitting at the starting line of the NCAA Championships grand final this June, they knew all they had to do was implement the race plan they’d spent all year creating.

This weekend, the No. 5 Michigan rowing team took home the Big Ten title for the sixth time in program history.

Both the first and second varsity eights beat Ohio State to claim first place. With their strongest races of the season, the top boats set the tone for the rest of the team.

By the end of the day, the Wolverines had four gold medals along with two two silver and a bronze.

Senior designated player Mackenzie Nemitz dealt with plenty of adversity throughout her Michigan career.

As Mackenzie Nemitz watched her team from the dugout, there wasn’t a doubt in her mind that Michigan would win. She just didn’t think the responsibility would fall on her shoulders.

Her team was down by one with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Indiana on April 7. With a runner in scoring position, it looked like the game would come down to the next batter — senior first baseman Alex Sobczak.

Beilein's departure leaves a short window for athletic director Warde Manuel to fill the vacancy.

ROSEMONT, Ill. — At 8:15 this morning, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel was surprised — along with the rest of the country — to find out that Michigan coach John Beilein would be leaving the program after 12 years to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.

And with that announcement, speculation commenced on who would lead the Wolverines next season. While Manuel was surprised by Beilein’s ultimate decision, he knew it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility — Beilein had informed the program of pending talks dating back to the beginning of the month.

Senior catcher Katie Alexander has recorded a .359 batting average over the past month.

The senior catcher is far from the most reliable batter in the lineup with an average of .279. Though slump in March put her batting average well below .200, it has been steadily rising since Michigan’s home opener.

But when she gets contact with the ball, it’s gone.

While an early spark is definitely not out of the ordinary for Michigan, anyone who watched the Wolverines at the plate in their Friday quarterfinal game would find them unrecognizable. They got just seven hits against No. 9 seed Illinois, only one of which was translated into a run.

They needed to make a shift after the lack-luster performance.

Madison Uden hit a walk-off home run as Michigan beat Penn State, 6-5

Michigan softball hasn’t lost to Penn State in twelve years. On Friday, that almost changed for the Wolverines. But capped off by a walk off home run from senior third basement Madison Uden, Michigan upheld its winning streak against the Nittany Lions.
