Junior midfielder Maggie Kane scored four goals, including two in eight seconds, in Michigan’s 20-7 win over No. 18 Colorado on Sunday.

Sunday, the No. 14 Michigan women’s lacrosse team (3-1) defeated No. 18 Colorado (1-2) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium, 20-7. Coming off a win on Friday against Louisville where they almost blew a five-goal lead, the Wolverines dominated the Buffaloes from the opening faceoff, scoring three goals in under 90 seconds.

Erik Bakich received a boost with Steven Hajjar's quality start Saturday.

As Steven Hajjar boarded the bus for the half hour drive between Salt River Fields and the Phoenix Municipal Stadium, his adrenaline was pumping and his nerves were racing.

The left-handed redshirt freshman had waited a year for his first start after a knee injury sidelined him last season, but on Saturday he was given only 30 minutes to prepare.

Fifth-year senior first baseman Matt Schmidt knocked a go ahead two run shot in the Michigan baseball team's first game of the season, to help the Wolverines defeat No. 1 Vanderbilt, 4-3.

The 2020 season started the way the No. 8 Michigan baseball team (3-1) hoped the 2019 season would end.

Trailing by one run in the top of the ninth inning, first baseman Matt Schmidt stepped up to the plate. For the fifth-year senior, this opportunity had been a long time coming. 

In the first game of the season in a rematch against the defending national champions, the story wrote itself. But Schmidt wanted to write the ending.

The opportunity was there for the taking. Everyone scrambled after the ball but the Trojans got to it first, scooped it up and seconds later, the ball was in the back of the net. 

Missed opportunities were a common theme for the No. 9 Michigan women’s lacrosse team (1-1) in its 10-8 loss to No. 16 Southern California (2-0) on Saturday.

Sophomore gymnast Maddie Mariani earned a career-best 9.900 on the beam Friday night, helping Michigan defeat Iowa.

One step at a time. It was a simple approach but it was all that sophomore Maddie Mariani needed to propel herself to a career best performance on the beam. She earned a 9.900 for her routine, but none of it came as a shock to her coach. All the Wolverines stepped up to lead the No. 7 Michigan women’s gymnastics team (7-0 overall, 5-0 Big Ten) to a 196.800-195.975 win over Iowa (4-6, 1-4) Friday night.

The meet was well-matched from the beginning. Many of the rotations ended with Michigan and Oklahoma within just a few points of each other. Both teams were putting up high scores and solid performances, and it was in the middle of this exciting meet when sophomore Cameron Bock stepped up to the parallel bars, one of his best events. The atmosphere in Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday afternoon was raucous and exciting. Both teams loudly cheered on their teammates as events occurred simultaneously, with the Wolverines aided by an enthusiastic home crowd. The result was a cacophony of support as No. 3 Michigan (8-0-0) and No. 2 Oklahoma (8-2-0) competed, with the Wolverines coming out on top, winning 416.500-408.900.

Despite all the outside expectations, the Michigan baseball team has not changed its approach to their game or what their program is. Falling one game short of a national title impacted their emotions going into the offseason, but it did not alter the Wolverines’ approach.

Freshman Josh Zawata had three assists and two goals in his Michigan debut.

And considering how injury-prone the team was last season, being able to rely on younger players that have the ability to step up and perform will be important for Michigan. Veteran Wolverines have now seen they can trust the freshmen to hold their ground at a high level.
