Sophomore forward Haley Brown led the Wolverines to victory in freshman Amy Dilk's absence.

Within a span of five minutes, Brown single-handedly turned Sunday’s game on its head in the second quarter — from a nine-point deficit to a one-point lead for the Wolverines by the end of the half.

Catalyzed by Brown’s performance, the Michigan women’s basketball team (16-9 overall, 7-6 Big Ten) escaped State College with a 66-62 win over Penn State (10-13, 3-9).

Junior wing Akienreh Johnson was a key contributor off Michigan’s bench in the Wolverines’ two wins last weekend.

Friday afternoon it was Akienreh Johnson and Kayla Robbins. On Sunday, it was Naz Hillmon. The common thread: two wins, two strong performances from the Wolverines’ bench.

At the beginning of the season, much of the conversation surrounding a revamped Michigan women’s basketball squad centered around its depth, which looked to be one of this team’s greatest strengths. That notion has been supported a number of times this season, but especially of late.

Senior guard Nicole Munger played well in her return from injury.

Nicole Munger picked up the loose ball and took off down the floor. The ankle injury Munger had suffered against Michigan State didn’t look to be ailing her now as she directed the fast break for the Wolverines. When a Hawkeye caught up, she dumped it off to Deja Church, who laid it in with ease.

A transition layup finished off by the sophomore guard perfectly characterized the first quarter of Michigan’s (13-9 overall, 4-6 Big Ten) 90-81 victory over Iowa (16-5, 7-3) Friday afternoon.

Senior guard Nicole Munger was helped off the court during Sunday's loss against Michigan State.

During the first quarter of Sunday’s game at Crisler Center, Nicole Munger fell to the floor, only getting up with the aid of her teammates and the Michigan training staff.

The senior guard Munger sat out the remainder of the contest against in-state rival, No. 23 Michigan State, with an undisclosed injury. The Wolverines struggled in her absence, eventually digging themselves deeper into a hole they couldn’t climb out of, losing 77-73.

Freshman forward Naz Hillmon scored 16 points to go with nine rebounds, despite the loss.

That 30-second sequence seemed to encapsulate the game as a whole. Despite making multiple runs to keep the game close, the Wolverines (12-8 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) just never took command, ultimately losing to the Hoosiers (16-4, 5-3) on the road, 70-60.

Senior guard Nicole Munger hit a key 3-pointer in Michigan's comeback against Ohio State.

There were multiple performances from Michigan players that contributed to a come-from-behind win over bitter rival Ohio State on Sunday afternoon — many of them by underclassmen — and yet, the two biggest plays of the game came from the two senior Wolverines — guard Nicole Munger and center Hallie Thome. For a team largely characterized by its youthful exuberance and inexperience, the veterans stepped up in a massive way.

So no, it’s not time to press the panic button on Michigan’s season, but there is a figurative finger hovering over it. The coming weeks decide everything.

Thursday, January 10, 2019 - 10:19pm
Freshman guard Amy Dilk will match up against Maryland's Taylor Mikesell.

Though it is just over halfway through the season, the importance of Michigan (11-5 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) visiting College Park to take on the 9th-ranked Terrapins (14-1, 3-1) cannot be overstated. Just like last year, a positive result for the Wolverines could push them over the line come the end of the season

Without senior center Hallie Thome in the game, Michigan struggled against Nebraska

Last year, the Michigan women’s basketball team narrowly secured a hard-fought overtime victory on the road over the Cornhuskers.

In the rematch, Nebraska exacted revenge. The Wolverines (9-4 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) fell to the Cornhuskers (6-6 overall, 1-0), 70-56. It was Nebraska’s fifth straight win at home.

Dilk’s cross-court pass caught Hillmon in stride, and she converted the wide-open layup. From there the Michigan women’s basketball team (8-3) never looked back en route to a 70-47 win over Morgan State (1-10).
