Attackman Bryce Clay tied a Michigan record with six goals in Tuesday's win.

The Wolverines had mustered only two goals for a majority of the first quarter until they finally erupted for four in the final 80 seconds. Their hot start propelled them to a 16-goal outburst. Led by dominant performances from the attack line, the Michigan men’s lacrosse team (2-1) was able to cruise to its second victory of the year, throttling Canisius (0-3), 16-8.

Jon Teske might’ve just missed a point-blank layup attempt, but he wasn’t going to give up on the play. As the rebound evaded the grasp of the Hoosiers, the senior center dove on it and had the wherewithal to find Franz Wagner alone under the basket for two. Teske’s effort, apart from sending the Crisler Center crowd into an uproar, capped off an offensive onslaught that saw his team take a 12-point lead on Indiana late in the first half. From there, the Michigan men’s basketball team (16-9 overall, 7-7 Big Ten) held serve to beat the Hoosiers (16-9, 6-8), 89-65, Sunday afternoon.

Isaiah Livers' return has energized a stagnant Michigan offense in the two games since his return.

The sequence was just one of a slew of fast break opportunities enjoyed by the Wolverines during Wednesday’s 79-54 rout of the Wildcats. Whether it was a rim-rattling dunk by junior forward Isaiah Livers or a wide-open 3-pointer from junior guard Eli Brooks, Michigan carved up Northwestern’s transition defense. By the end of the night, the Wolverines had scored 17 fastbreak points — their highest tally since playing Iowa State in late November.

Monday, February 10, 2020 - 11:49am
Junior guard Eli Brooks shut down Cassius Winston on the perimeter.

But, as much as Howard commended Brooks for his offensive production that night, he made even more of a point of lauding Brooks’ defense. Howard’s endorsement that night in Iowa City has rung true in the 22 days since, but was no more evident than when Michigan faced the Spartans on Saturday at Crisler Center.

Isaiah Livers returned to action on Saturday in Michigan's win over Michigan State.

Livers played 18 minutes in the first half and 31 in total, second to only Wagner. Over the past few weeks, it was clear Howard and his staff weren’t going to rush Livers back too soon, regardless of which direction the Wolverines were trending. But, when he was ready to go, they weren’t going to hold him back at all either.

Michigan fell to Ohio State, 61-58, in its third straight home loss Tuesday.

Whenever Wolverines and Buckeyes collide, sparks fly — and not in a sentimental way. That’s to be expected from two bitter rivals.

But the significance of Tuesday’s clash between the Michigan men’s basketball team and Ohio State extended far beyond any semblance of bragging rights for both teams, who entered the game tied for 12th in the Big Ten standings. Despite recent two-game win streaks, postseason aspirations were also on the line.

Saturday, February 1, 2020 - 8:35pm
Senior guard Zavier Simpson returned from a suspension on Saturday.

“At the end of the day, you learn from your lessons because you gotta move forward,” Simpson said. “It’s not about what happens, it’s about how you react from it. Just gotta reflect on things, move forward and try to get out here and get a dub, which we did.”

Michigan coach Juwan Howard believes that adversity like Michigan has faced builds character.

Two months ago, when the Michigan men’s basketball team looked at its upcoming Big Ten schedule, a midweek trip to Lincoln probably didn’t ring any alarm bells.

The Wolverines had just beaten now-No. 2 Gonzaga in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game and jumped out to a 7-0 record to start the season.

That was then — and it feels like a lifetime ago.

Ayo Dosunmu called game.

Despite being hounded by Zavier Simpson, the sophomore guard, with ice in his veins, rose up over Michigan’s shorter senior point guard and drained the go-ahead jumper from the elbow with just .05 seconds on the clock.

“That last play was guarded as well as you could possibly guard it,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “It was a really good player making a really hard shot. The one thing Ayo has at 6-foot-5 is the ability to get it over smaller guards so we just chose him to let it go.”

Despite a hot start and the return of junior forward Isaiah Livers, who was later injured, Michigan Men’s Basketball lost to Illinois in a closely contested match this Saturday, 64-62.

In their fourth straight loss, Michigan struggled to keep up with Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu, who had 27 points on the day.
