An entire op-ed was written about housing affordability in Ann Arbor, ending with a strong, resolute statement: Housing must be more affordable in Ann Arbor. Yet there was absolutely no mention of our most affordable, successful and long-lasting housing option in our city! Cooperative housing provides the most affordable housing for residents. Members of most houses pay less than $600 per month for rent, home-cooked meals, utilities and Wi-Fi.
Paying for rent in Ann Arbor has a major impact on my wallet, and I am certainly not the only one who thinks so. Most Ann Arbor residents know that cheap property values and rental prices in Ann Arbor are difficult to come by, myself included. So, how does Ann Arbor housing compare to the rest of the region? Very differently, and that difference may have major impacts on all of Washtenaw County.
Though Dr. Denis Mukwege was here at the University of Michigan just yesterday, he won’t be staying long. He has to get back to Panzi Hospital, a tall, tan stucco building in the eastern hills of the Democratic Republic of Congo. There, he will treat rape victims — women and children who come to the hospital following attacks by militia groups that roam the DRC.
But I won’t forget that there is beauty in the nuances of my secret: There will always be a little bit of all of this that is still unsolved, and I’m not afraid, worried or anxious to keep that part to myself.
