Styles, narratives, culture, music. This is SAMPLR magazine, snippets of content in different creative realms that showcase the beauty of Asians. We strive to cultivate a creative space that best represent individuals in the pan-Asian community and their intersectional identities.

In this issue, we want to start off this magazine by setting the tone with chic portrait photography and fashion trends, having Asians in Diaspora recreate those trendy looks. We then get more personal with narratives and cultures in later sections of the magazine.

Graduation caps in the air at 2019 University commencement

Hello class of 2019

I come here today to not only speak about my story but to speak on our journey together and validate it.

Although each of our journeys have been different, we all fought with the same resiliency.

We have conquered so much and sitting here proves that whether it was going through tough classes, long nights, or lots of cramming. We got through it.

We even thought our summer experience with ALMA, CSP, or Bridge was going to be our college experience, but we quickly came to find out it wasn’t.

Every community has its lost of taboo topics. Some in the black community include mental health (sadly) and therapy. But one that is not often realized is country music. It’s ok if someone doesn’t like the stereotypical things like rap music or Kool-aid. But don’t let anyone find out that you liked Taylor Swift in her “You Belong With Me” days and you might get your revoked. Even in a community where they accomplishments of each one is widely celebrated, Darius Rucker, who won multiple Grammys in the country category got no such praise.

When the trailer for the movie “Us” came out on Christmas Day, it seemed to shake up the nation. Not only did the film itself just look horrifyingly good, but it was also very refreshing for Black people around the country.

In commemoration of Israel’s 70th anniversary on May 15, Nadav Tamir, policy adviser to former President of Israel Shimon Peres and former member of the Israeli Defense Forces, addressed students on Wednesday night. SAFE (Students Allied for Freedom and Equality) and its allies participated in a silent demonstration and die-in to protest the celebration of what Palestinian communities refer to as “Nakba,” or the mass displacement and decimation of Palestinian people and villages.
